What is the difference between a barcode and a Quick Response (QR) code?

The main difference between a barcode and a QR code is the amount of information each of these can store.

The barcode can only store information on a horizontal plane while the QR code stores information on both the vertical and horizontal axis.

Barcode vs QR Code difference

Because of this, the barcode is limited to only 25 characters while the QR code can store up to 2500 characters.

The normal barcode is also more difficult to read because it requires focused scanning while the QR code can read from any angle.

Another main difference is that a QR code can be printed on smaller labels than a barcode label therefore more information can be stored on a smaller label. This in itself can be a good cost-saving because less paper is used to produce the label itself.

Can you convert a barcode into a QR code?

Yes, specialized software can convert current barcodes into QR codes.

Before doing this however you must know what the purpose behind this is as most small businesses won't require the additional capacity that a QR code provides and is therefore not worth the effort.

This type of exercise will also depend on the volumes you intend converting but overall it cannot hurt your business should you do it. It all comes down to the cost factor versus the end benefit.

Most businesses following this route will be in a position where they expect severe growth in the future that will require them to have the capacity to store more information.

Bar code labels - Summary

Barcode labelling as we can see will generate time-saving opportunities which will lead to productivity increases and this is where you will save money.

The purpose of a business is to make money and do it in an efficient manner.

The choice of barcoding or QR coding will depend solely on your business and operational requirements.
